“We will defend the University of the Philippines, our sanctuary, as much as it has defended us,” said a Lumad student. [quote taken from Jose Monfred Sy's article about the protest https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20210130093010398]

The photo was shot during the assembly on January 19, 2021 at the steps of the Quezon Hall. The Lumad students of the UP Diliman Bakwit School took part in the protest against the unilateral abrogation of the 1989 University of the Philippines-Department of National Defense (UP-DND) Accord.

The Bakwit School was established to act as a refuge for the victims of the forced closures of Lumad Schools and militarization of the Lumad lands in Mindanao. The attempt to overrule the 1989 UP-DND Accord meant deterring the freedom and security the University offered our Lumad brothers and sisters. This photo serves as a testament of the courage, perseverance, and collective strength taught in the Bakwit School.
